Iran forest gives visitors a shout

What's eerie about one of Iran's jungles is that you can hear it yell when it gets dark.

What's eerie about one of Iran's jungles is that you can hear it yell when it gets dark.

This screaming forest is located in Sareborj village where strange and horrible sounds are heard from its towering trees when the night falls. Some residents of the village believe this sound is caused by crickets while others reckon it is the locusts’ fault.

According to a local official, experts looked into the matter and determined that the noise was caused by a particular kind of cricket that swarms the village when the river is brimming with water and hides in the trees and vegetation.

Sometimes there are as many as 3000 crickets on each tree, which gives their song a scream-like quality. These crickets typically live for forty days before dying.

Each year, a large number of tourists visit Sareborj village in Razavi Khorasan Province because of this eerie phenomenon.
